Viv in San Jose Mercury News

There's another great opening act not to be missed: In Thursday's free Music in the Park in San Jose, the opening band, VIV, is as skilled a group of songwriters as I've heard in years.

It rocks as tight as early Tom Petty, with songwriting as focused as Coldplay's: great tunes, rocking vocals.

The group's second album, ``Flawed,'' sounds as if it should be a classic rock staple, not an indie release.

VIV opens for the BoDeans at 5 p.m. at Plaza de Cesar Chavez.
